Mental Health in the IDF: A Personal Mission

Military service often involves traumatic experiences that can lead to PTSD. Following the events of October 7th, soldiers were exposed to harrowing situations, leading to a rise in PTSD and suicide risks within the Israeli defense community.

This issue hits home for me. My cousin took his own life during his military service at the age of 20. I know firsthand the immense pain inflicted on family and friends, and I often wish someone had been able to recognize his distress in time.

Our Solution

In collaboration with the IDF, I designed a process aimed at strengthening the bond between commanders and their subordinates while enabling early detection of self-harm risks. We developed digital questionnaires for soldiers, the results of which are analyzed and sent to commanders. These generate structured interview protocols, guiding commanders through sensitive conversations based on the soldiers'
specific responses.

From Data to Conversation

Information is presented to the commander in a structured, scannable layout.

Sample System Prompts

"Inquire about the frequent changes
in educational institutions during high school."

"Clarify living arrangements: Which parent does the
soldier live with, and is there contact with both?"

"Discuss financial status: Is the soldier facing
economic hardship? do they support their household?"

Given the inherent hierarchy and culture of toughness in the military, bridging the emotional gap is a challenge. The platform provides a structured way to overcome these barriers, allowing meaningful dialogue about personal struggles and facilitating intervention.

Unstructured vs. Guided Interviews

Transforming standard interviews into a smart, guided process. The design organizes complex information and uses risk-detecting inputs to alert commanders of potential dangers

The Foundation: A Living Design System

The Foundation:
A Living Design System

To support the platform's complexity and ensure consistency across all modules, I built a comprehensive Design System from scratch. This unified library served as the single source of truth, enabling us to scale development rapidly and maintain a cohesive user experience—from routine management tools to critical emergency features.

Wartime Emergency Response

When crises hit, speed is paramount. During intense wartime operations, with civilian and military sectors under attack, immediate solutions were required. Within just a few hours, I developed and deployed a critical reporting tool enabling commanders to track troop locations in real-time - ensuring personnel accountability when it mattered most.

IMPACT

Though official data is pending, the initial rollout was successful. The platform garnered enthusiastic feedback from the field, indicating a strong positive reception from both command staff and troops

I’ve interviewed extensively in many roles, but this tool allows you to access details in a way that makes you feel truly prepared. It allows you to address specific points and guide the soldier—points I’m not sure I would have reached without this platform. When soldiers walk in, they are surprised by how well you already know them.
